Polyurethane (PU) is a polymeric material whose main chain contains repeating urethane (-NHCOO-) structural units. Thanks to its unique soft–hard segment architecture, polyurethane exhibits excellent mechanical strength, wear resistance, oil resistance, solvent resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance; however, it suffers from shortcomings in heat resistance and water resistance, which to some extent limit its broader application in high‑end sectors.

Carbon‑hydroxy silicone oil is an organosilicon compound in which carbon‑hydroxy groups (C–OH) are introduced into the main chain or side chains of a polysiloxane. It combines the heat resistance, weatherability, and low surface energy characteristic of silicone materials with the high reactivity of hydroxyl groups. This product can react with isocyanates to covalently link the polysiloxane via Si–C bonds into polymer systems, thereby effectively modifying polyurethane resins. This modification significantly enhances the material’s thermal stability, hydrolytic resistance, and stain resistance, while also improving its tactile feel and surface properties.

I. Main Methods for Modifying Polyurethane with Carbon-Hydroxyl Silicone Oil

The modification of polyurethane by carbon‑hydroxyl silicone oil is mainly categorized into two types: block copolymerization modification and graft copolymerization modification.

Block copolymer modification: By chemically bonding organosilicon groups to the polyurethane molecular chains, interphase compatibility is enhanced, resulting in more balanced and stable overall material performance.

Graft copolymerization modification: By grafting organosilicon side chains onto the polyurethane backbone, the issue of organosilicon migration is mitigated, and while preserving the original mechanical properties of polyurethane, the material’s surface characteristics are significantly enhanced.

II. Application Areas of Carbon-Hydroxyl Silicone Oil-Modified Polyurethane

Carbon‑hydroxyl silicone‑modified polyurethane exhibits outstanding performance and has been widely applied in numerous industries, including textiles and leather, coatings, adhesives, and elastomers.

Textile and Leather Industry: Enhances the softness and delicate hand feel of fabrics and leathers, improves water- and stain‑resistance, and boosts product durability and ease of cleaning.

Paint Industry: It improves the leveling of coatings, enhances their weatherability, chemical resistance, anti‑sticking properties, and stain resistance, and allows for flexible adjustment of coating gloss.

Adhesives field: Enhances the adhesive’s flexibility, elasticity, weather resistance, chemical resistance, and high-temperature performance.

Elastomer field: It enhances the elastomer’s elasticity, chemical resistance, oil resistance, and heat resistance, while allowing hardness and elastic modulus to be tailored as needed.
